Economic hardship: Lagos state police command vows to clamp down on protesters

The Lagos State Police Command has issued a stern warning to potential protesters, stating that it will take decisive action against any demonstration that impedes the free flow of traffic.

Benjamin Hundeyin, the Command’s Public Relations Officer, emphasized the police’s commitment to ensuring the safety of lives and property in the face of planned protests in the state.

Hundeyin disclosed that the police are aware of the planned protests and are prepared to implement necessary measures to safeguard the well-being of Lagosians.

He said nothing would be allowed to obstruct the free flow of traffic or disturb the peaceful environment necessary for residents to carry out their lawful duties.

This announcement comes amidst a wave of protests across some states in Nigeria, with demonstrators expressing grievances over the high cost of living and soaring food prices.

Part of the statement read;

“The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, CP Adegoke Fayoade, mni has assured Lagosians that the Command has put necessary measures in place to ensure the safety of lives and property, free flow of traffic and a peaceful environment for carrying out their respective lawful duties.

“This assurance has become imperative following news making the rounds about nationwide protests billed to start on Monday, February 26, 2024, an action capable of grounding commercial activities and obstructing the free flow of traffic.

“The Command will live up to its mandate of ensuring that no person or group of persons is allowed to infringe on the fundamental human rights of others, especially the rights to freedom of movement and right to dignity of human persons.”
