The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has said that Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State will not get the party’s governorship ticket automatically if he decides to join it.
Speaking to journalists in Abuja on Friday, the National Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Mr. Kola Ologbondiyan, said the embattled governor will be welcomed into its fold.
Ologbondiyan said: “Yes, we will accept him, of course.”
On PDP’s governorship ticket for Obaseki, he said: “Joining a party is different from contesting an election. These are two separate things. People join political parties from their wards. We are in touch with our Edo State chapter and they have not told us that the governor had joined our party.”
He, however, noted that Governor Obaseki had yet to approach the PDP for membership as of 6.57 pm on Friday.
In a related development, the chairman of the party in Edo state, Hon. Tony Aziegbemi, Obaseki is not a member of the party for now.
He disclosed this on Saturday during a popular programme, ‘The Weekend Show’ on Africa Independent Television, AIT.
“As we speak, His Excellency Governor Godwin Obaseki has not joined the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP,” he said.
However, he said the party will welcome Obaseki if he decides to join the PDP after he was disqualified by the All Progressives Congress, APC from participating in the forthcoming primary of the party.
Hon. Aziegbemi added that Obaseki will not be able to participate in the party’s primary except the National Working Committee of PDP grants him a waiver.
He maintained that Obaseki will not get an automatic ticket, even, if granted waiver by the NWC, stressing that he will have to battle it out with other governorship aspirants in the party.
Easy breezy! All Obaseki needs to do is dole out money to the PDP hierarchy and he will be annointed their candidate.
