Edo Assembly Expresses Concern Over Widespread Cases of Cult-Related Murders

The Members of the Edo State House of Assembly voiced concern on Tuesday about revitalising secret cult-related killings in the state.

The lawmakers urged the state government and relevant security agencies to stop the killings and bring the wrongdoers to justice as soon as possible.

Frank Omosigho (PDP, Oredo East) raised the alarm after moving a motion under matters of urgent public importance.

Moving the motion, Omosighon informed the house that seven young men had been killed in various locations across the state in the previous week.

The News Agency of Nigeria quoted him as saying: “Two young men were killed in Amagba; another was shot dead while worshipping in the church; and some others were killed in Egor and Auchi.

“The rate of wanton killings among secret cult groups in Edo is worrisome and portends grave danger to the lives of the citizens.”

While condemning the senseless killings by suspected cultists, Omosigho urged the state government to investigate the causes of the killings and end them.

Other lawmakers who spoke on the issue urged the DSS to be more proactive in gathering information to nip security issues in the bud before they worsened.

The legislators approved a motion asking the state police commissioner and all security authorities to step in and guarantee the protection of individuals and assets.

The Speaker, Blessing Agbebaku, said: “The senseless killing is worrisome. No one has the right to take a life he or she did not create.”

Agbebaku then directed the house clerk, Yahaya Omogbai, to forward copies of the resolution to the appropriate authorities for action.
