“Elected lawmakers trading dollars for Senate President and Speaker votes” — Activist

A well-known public affairs commentator, Deji Adeyanju, has expressed his concern over reports of newly elected Senators and members of the House of Representatives receiving bribes to secure their votes for the selection of new leaders.

POLITICS NIGERIA reports that the 10th National Assembly is scheduled to be inaugurated in June for another four years of legislative work.

The Senate is expected to elect a new President to replace Ahmed Lawan, while the House of Representatives will be choosing a new Speaker to replace Femi Gbajabiamila.

Debates are ongoing about which geopolitical zones of the country should produce the two leaders of the National Assembly. While the All Progressives Congress (APC), which holds the majority, has yet to release its zoning formula, those in the minority are also maneuvering to surpass the ruling party.

As a result, senior lawmakers who are interested in the two positions have already started lobbying and seeking the support of other members to secure the seats.

However, Adeyanju expressed disappointment that some candidates and voters are exchanging dollars to influence the voting process.

In a Facebook post, he said: “They are all collecting dollars to vote Senate President and Speaker. Super sad nation.”
