Former CBN Governor, Godwin Emefiele, to appear in court today again, faces fresh charges

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is set to arraign former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) governor Godwin Emefiele today before the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja.

The charges, an amended 20-count document dated January 17, 2024, were filed by EFCC counsel Rotimi Oyedepo and others on behalf of the attorney-general of the federation (AGF).

This legal development follows a six-count charge filed against Emefiele in August 2023, where he pleaded not guilty and was subsequently granted bail by Justice Hamza Muazu on November 22, 2023.

The amended charges include new counts relating to the alleged fraudulent award of contracts to Emefiele’s wife, Omoile Margret, his brother-in-law, Omoile Macombo, and other associates.

The charges range from conspiracy to commit forgery, conferring a corrupt advantage, to criminal breach of trust.

EFCC prosecutor Rotimi Oyedepo confirmed the fresh arraignment scheduled today before Justice Muazu. Emefiele, in the previous proceedings, had pleaded not guilty to the charges.

In a recent development, the court approved Emefiele’s request to travel out of Abuja, but with a strict condition that he must stay within the country, adhering to the bail terms restricting his movements to the FCT.
