Former senator gives reasons for rising coups in Africa

Former Kaduna Central senator, Shehu Sani, says African leaders need to consider why democratic government is failing in the region.

Politics Nigeria recalls that the coup plotters in the Niger Republic had blamed rising insecurity and a lack of economic growth, stating that the intervention was necessary to avoid the gradual and inevitable end of the country.

However, in the case of Gabon, the military blamed the alleged fraudulent and irregular election which produced Ali Bongo as president.

Speaking on behalf of the Gabonese people, the military officers expressed their determination to safeguard peace by ending the current regime that has lasted over 40 years.

In a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, Sani said it is time to stop asking why military coups are succeeding in Africa and focus on why democracies was failing.

Sani expressed surprise at how the Gabonese stormed the streets and danced in excitement over the coup.

Sani added that Ali Bong’s family dominated and destroyed democracy in the country.

He wrote, “It’s time we stop asking why are military coups succeeding in Africa and start asking why democracies are failing in Africa. A BBC correspondent just reported people in Gabon are “genuinely” trooping out to the streets in support of the Coup in Libreville

“The Bongo family dominated and destroyed Democracy. Democracy dies in Africa when elections are poisoned.”
