IPOB: Reno Omokri warns FG against banning Facebook

Ex-President Goodluck Jonathan’s former aide, Reno Omokri, has advised the Federal Government against banning Facebook over the alleged inciting statements by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

POLITICS NIGERIA recalls that the Minister of information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, had on Tuesday asked Facebook and other social media platforms to disallow IPOB from using their platforms to incite violence and instigate ethnic hatred.

The Minister, who made the appeal in Abuja during a meeting with a team from Facebook, noted that the actions of the proscribed group have real-life implications, adding that by purveying hate and inciting violence, people are getting killed while private and public property are being attacked and destroyed, with security agencies and other symbols of government as their choice targets.

Some individuals believe the FG is contemplating to ban Facebook as it did to Twitter. But Omokri is sending a warning message.

“It will be foolhardy for the Buhari junta to attempt banning Facebook. Nigerians will just bypass that ban via VPNs. We will lose billions in revenue at a time the Naira is trading at ₦600 to $1. Plus, elections are near. A lot of campaigning is done on FB. Think!” he wrote on his verified Twitter handle recently.
