JUST IN: House of Reps to investigate certificate racketeering involving FG officials

The House of Representatives has taken a decisive step to investigate officials of Federal Government Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) involved in an alleged certificate racketeering scheme affecting Nigerian students.

The resolution to conduct the investigation was reached following the adoption of a motion on the floor of the House on Wednesday.

The motion, moved by Abubakar Fulata, the representative of Birniwa/Guri/Kiri-Kasamma Federal Constituency of Jigawa State, highlighted the need to address the issue of certificate racketeering that came to light when a Nigerian reporter, Umar Audu, obtained a degree from a university in Cotonou, Benin Republic, within six weeks.

Subsequently, Audu participated in the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) scheme.

In December 2022, Audu accused unnamed officials from the Ministry of Education of being part of a racketeering syndicate, leading to widespread criticism.

The House vowed to identify officials of MDAs and students involved in such institutions and their campuses over the last ten years.

According to the green chambers, the investigation will unveil the extent of the alleged racketeering and hold accountable those responsible for compromising the integrity of educational processes and certifications.
