JUST IN: Senate confirms Tsammani, 10 others as Supreme Court Justices

The Senate has confirmed the appointment of 11 new Justices to the Supreme Court, finally bringing the nation’s highest judicial body to its full capacity of 21 members.

The vacancies were left by retirements and departures.

President Bola Tinubu nominated the 11 Justices following recommendations from the National Judicial Council.

The justices include Justice Haruna Tsammani (Northeast), who chaired the Presidential Election Petition Court, Justice Moore Adumein (South-South), Justice Jummai Sankey (North-central), Justice Chidiebere Uwa (South-east) and Justice Chioma Nwosu-Iheme (South-east)

The others include Justice Obande Ogbuinya (South-east), Justice Stephen Adah(North-central), Justice Habeeb Abiru (South-west), Justice Jamilu Tukur (Northwest), Justice Abubakar Umar (Northwest) and Justice Mohammed Idris( North-central).

The Senate Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters reviewed the nominations and verified their qualifications.

Committee Chairman Mohammed Tahir assured the Senate that all nominees met the required 15 years of experience outlined in the Constitution and demonstrated exceptional qualities for the demanding role.

Deputy Senate President Jibrin Barau commended the Committee’s thoroughness and expressed confidence in the chosen Justices’ abilities. Following a voice vote, the Senate unanimously confirmed all 11 nominees.
