Kano to start construction on abandoned road after budget reassessment

The Kano Executive Council has authorised the completion of the abandoned Janguza-Durum-Kabo-Karaye Road, which was granted in 2010.

The contract for the road project, which was originally given by Governor Ibrahim Shekarau’s government at the cost of N3.424 billion, had to be revised to N7.020 billion due to the scope of work, which included a two-coat layer surface coating and an asphaltic concrete wearing course.

Commissioner for Information Malam Muhammad Garba said this while briefing reporters on the results of the weekly council meeting held at the Africa House, Government House, Kano.

While the contractor accepted the increased price and re-mobilised to the job site, he said, the Ministry of Works and Infrastructure noticed the state’s financial constraints, as well as the impact of the COVID-19 epidemic on the world economy, and re-evaluated the budget.

However, the council rejected the recommended downward revision of project cost, which indicated a decrease of over N2 billion to allow for the execution of quality works and account for the current rise in construction material costs, according to Mr Garba.

The commissioner said the project will be co-financed by the state government and the benefiting local government councils of Kabo, Karaye, and Rimin Gado on a 50-50 basis.

He also stated that the council had approved an N863 million contract to build the Ganduje-Landigel-Jalli Road.
