Labour talks tough as Tinubu reveals delay in payment of new minimum wage

President Bola Tinubu has provided more reasons for the delay in the implementation  of the new minimum wage.

President Tinubu noted that his government was still discussing with the labour leaders to agree on minimum wages that will be fair and implementable by the 36 states of the federation.

He disclosed that his government was taking into account the financial strength of the states before deciding on a new minimum wage that would be applicable across all sectors countrywide.

“I understand the concerns regarding the unveiling of the new minimum wage and how states will manage these changes, especially those with fewer resources. To address this, my administration has approved a provisional increase in the federal minimum wage to N35,000 per month for a six-month period, two months of which have already been paid,” Tinubu said.

“This decision follows extensive consultations with the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC). In managing the situation with the states, we are working closely with them to ensure the new wage structure is practical and sustainable. It’s important that each state’s unique financial situation is considered. We are focused on strategies to help states strengthen their economies, considering factors like tax efficiency and economic diversification.

“We are committed to ongoing dialogues with labour unions and state governments. This collaborative approach is crucial to ensure that the new minimum wage is fair, reasonable, and implementable across all states. Our goal is to balance the economic well-being of our workers with the overall financial health of the nation. We ask Nigerians to be rest assured that our administration will not rest until we have delivered a sustainable solution in the best interest of Nigerians,” he added.

But the organized labour has declared that it would not accept any excuse from state governments on the implementation of the new minimum wage.

Baring any last minute change, the new minimum wage is expected to come into effect from April 2024.

  1. The president always claim he knows the challenges the workers and people of Nigerians are facing? My question is if he really knows, what els is he waiting for to start solving them, before people bigging to die on the street?

    1. As he started that they have paid# 35,000 for two months I that want is not all the ministries ,let them be fast so that their people may not be dieing .

  2. we have only been paid one month palliative ie September’s own, how comes mr president said we have been paid two months? there’s problem in Nigeria. only God will see us through in this country, mr president we are waiting for October and November palliative.

  3. Which two months palliatives have been paid ? Let Jagaban go and ask oh,.it’s only one month that was paid. Workers are waiting for Oct and Nov outstanding palliatives to be paid before Christmas. Again, don’t wait for state governors fix and implement new minimum wage for Federal workers and allow d state governors to negotiate and fix their own base on their strength and capacity. Federal workers can’t be paid then same minimum wage with the various states whatsoever.

  4. Parlertive is more important to workers federal government should start paying October parlertive for them

  5. I don’t know why i cannot be proud in my country for once, even to recite national anthem is disguising to me,how can citizens would be treated like slaves, money that suppose to for everybody, shame on our leaders, very soon the power will fail in to jail.

  6. Mr Tinubu is just playing games with Nigerians. Even the wage allowance he claims, the payment received was only one month. In his speech he said Nigerians deserve a living wage, but he is saying otherwise now. In as much as his yatch is better than lives of Nigerians. The subsidy removal should not be seen as a surprise because even the palliative is another doom for Nigerians. If he succeeds in pocketing every body in the country who should tell him the truth ,he should fear the fearless and angered generation he is rebirthing.

  7. He claimed to be the best person for the job, But failed in so many areas! We are experiencing a bad government/ leaders everyday

  8. Mr president saying that he has paid two months already hmmmmm, last time I checked it was only September that was paid.
