Lagos: 12-year-old boy dies after saying no to a cult, allegedly being beaten by schoolmates

A Twitter user claims that his 12-year-old cousin, who went to Dowen College, died of injuries after being reportedly attacked by fellow students who were pressuring him to join a cult.

“This is my 12 years old cousin that was beaten to death at a school that cost over 1 million naira,” the user had written. “Dowen college is a disgrace. He mentioned 5 names before passing yesterday… They tried to put him in cult, he refused and they killed him. Secondary school o.”

The school, however, denied the charges. According to reports, the school management contacted the deceased’s parents after his death and informed them that his son had been injured while playing football at the school and the boy just complained of leg pain and was given treatment by a residential doctor before his parents picked him up from school last Tuesday.

Dowen College claimed the incident was “strange and unbelievable” and added that the investigation “showed that there was no fighting, bullying, or any form of attack on the boy.”

As a faith-based institution, the school has strict policies and doesn’t tolerate any acts of cultism or other social vices. It was regrettable that various reports regarding how the student died have been making the rounds on social media sites.
