Lagos announces moves to address flooding — one day before floods immobilise locals

Lagos State Government on Saturday announced moves to address the perennial flooding in Ikeja. It was revealed that the construction of a drainage channel on Acme Road, Ikeja, would begin in December.

Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources Tunji Bello said Saturday that the construction would discharge floodwater on and around the Oba Ogunnusi Road into System 1 (Odo Iya Alaro), Vori Close.

According to Mr Bello, The work was set to start in the first week of December, and the contractor handling the project had concluded the preliminary work.

“Flooding of Oba Ogunnusi has been a recurring problem within the Ikeja Local Government Area of the state for quite a while,” the government’s statement reads.

“The need to finally address the flooding challenge at Oba Ogunnusi Road and its effect on residents and motorists after several palliative measures led to the award of the new contract for the construction of a parallel channel along Acme Road to take off excess water from Oba Ogunnusi Road.”

The statement was made prior to the floods that immobilised residents and commuters in and around the Oko Oba, Ekoro, Akowonjo, and Egbeda areas of Lagos State on Sunday.

It was reported that the floods were caused by a downpour at around 1.20 p.m. on Sunday. According to the reports, at least 25 vehicles were damaged by the floods.
