Nigeria plans $1.2bn export capacity for every state

The Federal Government has said that it is working on a plan that will raise Nigeria’s export capacity to $1.2 billion or more.

During an African joint news conference with the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) in Abuja on Monday, Continental Free Trade Agreement (AfCFTA) National Action Committee secretary Francis Anatogu said that the target was important to reposition the country’s economy.

The Senior Special Assistant to President Muhammadu Buhari on Public Sector Matters said that a draft implementation plan on AfCFTA had been created to facilitate effective implementation of the continental trade pact at the sub-national levels.

“First of the strategic goals in the implementation plan is to grow export capacity of every state to the tune of $1.2 billion with a focus on products where there is a competitive advantage,” said Mr Anatogu ahead of the Nigeria AfCFTA Subnational Strategy Workshop on Tuesday in the country’s capital.

“The organizing of the first subnational strategy workshop in collaboration with the NGF here in Abuja is an intervention that will put the nation on course to make this goal a reality.”

Mr Anatogu continued that part of the implementation strategy was to help states build the capacity to participate in the single African market and stressed the need for the states to ensure that they have the right policies and structures to support the target.

He also underlined the importance of continuous trading activities between states in the country as well as with other countries.
