Nigerian man in Texas receives 3-year sentence for $1.2 million online dating scam

A Nigerian resident in Texas has been handed a three-year prison sentence for orchestrating a $1.2 million fraudulent scheme through online dating platforms.

Rotimi Oladimeji, part of a group involving co-conspirators from Nigeria and the U.S., was found guilty of manipulating an individual through the “Silver Singles” dating site.

Under false pretences, Oladimeji and his associates created a fictitious persona of a Belgian veterinarian based in St. Louis, Missouri. Using deceptive profiles and fabricated narratives, they manipulated the victim into believing in a fabricated emergency in Dubai, compelling her to transfer substantial funds to purportedly aid the veterinarian’s fictitious escape from a contrived predicament.

After pleading guilty to multiple charges, including mail fraud, wire fraud, and conspiracy, Oladimeji faced a three-year sentence.

Similarly implicated in the scam, his accomplices, Olumide Akrinmade and Adewale Adesanya, received sentences of 15 months and four years, respectively, and were directed to reimburse the entire defrauded amount to the victim.
