1. Ramadan: President Buhari sends special message to Muslims
President Muhammadu Buhari has issued a special message to all Muslim faithful in the country as the Ramadan fast begins. He described the Ramadan 2020 as a challenge, falling as it is in the period of the global pandemic, which has spread to more than 200 nations, with virtually all countries advising citizens to avoid large gatherings and have their prayers and meals (suhoor and iftar) individually or with family at home.
2. “Why COVID-19 Cases are increasing in Lagos” – Sanwo-Olu opens up
The Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu has explained the reason for the sudden increase in the number of Coronavirus(COVID-19) cases recorded in Lagos in the last few days. Mr Sanwo-olu while responding to question at the statehouse in Marina on Thursday said that community testing employed by the state is causing the effect. Before now, Mr Sanwo-olu has said it needs to get worse before it gets better.
3. President Muhammadu Buhari gets new appointment
Presidents of West African countries under the aegis of ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government have appointed President Muhammadu Buhari ‘Champion of the COVID-19 response’. The appointment took place Thursday at the Extraordinary ECOWAS Summit on COVID-19 which was held via teleconferencing under the Chairmanship of His Excellency, Mahamadou Issoufou, President of the Republic of Niger.
4. “Coronavirus Lockdown not effective” – Lagos speaker, Obasa
The Speaker of the Lagos State Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, has decried the ineffectiveness of the lockdown in the state. Obasa, in a statement released on Twitter, stated that the lockdown is not quite effective as the local government authorities should also be involved.
5. Group releases list of possible Igbo Presidential Candidates in 2023
A group known as the centre for Equity and Justice has released a list of possible Igbo presidential and Vice Presidential candidates for the 2023 elections. The group, in a statement to POLITICS NIGERIA on Thursday, signed by its spokesperson, Chuks Ibegbu, noted that the current list contains names of possible presidential candidates who could be fielded from the South-East and Vice-presidential candidates from the north, adding that a final list will be released soon.
6. Galadima Modu-Sheriff is Dead
Prominent Businessman, Galadima Modu-Sheriff is dead. POLITICS NIGERIA gathered that the Deceased Galadima is a father to Sen. Ali Modu Sheriff, the former governor of Borno State. He died on Wednesday night. It was learned that Galadim died in a fire incident that consumed his house in Damboa, Maiduguri.
7. President Buhari reacts to Galadima Modu-Sheriff’s death
Nigeria’s leader, President Muhammadu Buhari has extended condolences to the family of late Galadima Modu-Sheriff, father of former Borno state governor, Ali Modu-Sheriff. POLITICS NIGERIA gathered that the late Galadima died after a fire incident at his home in Damboa, Maiduguri. Reacting to his demise, the President expressed sadness and commiserated with Governor Babagana Zulum of Borno State, the Shehu of Borno, and the entire Borno Emirate Council.
8. “The next few months will be Brutal for Nigeria” – Fani-Kayode, gives reasons
Former aviation minister, Chief Femi Fani-Kayode has predicted that the next few months will be very difficult for Nigerians owing to what he called ‘bad leadership’. FFK, while criticizing President Muhammadu Buhari over his response to the Coronavirus Pandemic currently ravaging the country stated that there will be ‘little or no respite’ for citizens of the country.
9. Timi Frank attacks Nigerian Government for receiving COVID-19 aides from China
Former deputy national publicity secretary of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Timi Frank has berated the federal government for asking China for COVID-19 loans. Frank, a critic of President Muhammadu Buhari, is reacting to the news of China donating N48m to support Nigeria’s fight against Coronavirus. He criticised the Presidential Taskforce on COVID-19 for receiving COVID-19 aides from the Chinese amidst how they are treating Africans in China.
10. Taskforce shoots Policewoman dead in Rivers state [PHOTO]
A policewoman was shot dead by her colleague, a police officer attached to the Rivers State task force team on COVID-19, on Thursday evening. This is coming after several human rights activists and groups have condemned the mayhem unleashed by these operatives while enforcing the lockdown. It was gathered that the policewoman, who controls the traffic at Eneka first market in Port Harcourt, the state capital, was hit by a stray bullet when some task force members attempted to arrest fleeing traders.
