Ohanaeze Ndigbo calls for priority of cement technology in road construction

Ohanaeze Ndigbo has called on the Presidency and the National Assembly to prioritise the use of cement technology in the construction of federal highways in 2024.

The apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation also urged the government to rescind contracts that do not comply with this directive.

In a statement released on Tuesday, Ohanaeze Ndigbo commended President Bola Tinubu and the Ministry of Works for approving funds and overseeing the ongoing repairs of federal highways across the country.

The statement noted that these initiatives have restored the confidence of Nigerians and are leading to the construction of high-quality and durable roads.

However, Ohanaeze Ndigbo expressed concern over reports that some contractors are not complying with the government’s directives to use concrete and cement technology in highway construction. The organisation said the benefits of this technology include cost-effectiveness, reduced need for foreign exchange, and longer lifespan compared to asphalt roads.

“Asphalt roads have a lifespan of only 10 years, and the prices of asphalt are experiencing a geometric progression,” the statement said. “On the other hand, the rise in the price of concrete is based on arithmetic progression, making it a far more sustainable and economical choice.”

Ohanaeze Ndigbo, therefore, urged the Presidency and the National Assembly to work together to enforce the use of concrete and cement technology in highway construction. The organisation also suggested that the government consider enacting or amending laws to empower the government to revoke non-compliant contracts and engage competent local contractors for project execution.

“The Minister of Works, Senator Engr Dave Umahi, has demonstrated both the expertise and political will necessary to replicate the success achieved in Ebonyi State on a larger scale,” the statement said. “By prioritizing cement technology, we can expedite the delivery of top-notch highways and standard roads throughout the country in 2024, ensuring that Nigerians enjoy a well-connected road network in line with President Tinubu’s renewed hope agenda.”
