Fuel Price Hike: Nigerian University Offers Loans to Workers for Transportation

Bayero University Kano (BUK) has announced its decision to roll out palliative measures for staff and students to cushion the current difficulties Nigerians face following the removal of fuel subsidy.

This was disclosed by Prof. Sagir Adamu-Abbas, the University’s Vice Chancellor, during BUK’s 56th congregation meeting on Saturday, July 22.

Prof. Adamu-Abbas disclosed that a lot of funds had been allocated to University Cooperatives Committee to purchase foodstuff and distribute to staff in a non-interest format, payable in 6 months.

The VC added that the management had also concluded an arrangement with the BUK Microfinance Bank to provide non-interest loans to staff to pay school fees to their children.

While assuring that the University would take the burden of interest, the vice-chancellor said the gesture would cushion the effect of an increment in registration fees.

The vice-chancellor added that there was an arrangement with the Kano State government to provide buses that would transport students from specified destinations to the university campuses and take them back at affordable rates.

He said upon the conclusion of arrangements, Kanawa buses would start passing through the routes of BUK campuses,” the statement noted.

Concerning junior staff, Adamu-Abbas said the University was negotiating to purchase bicycles to help the junior workers cushion the hike in transportation fares.
