In response to the escalating insecurity in Nigeria, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the 2023 elections, Mr Peter Obi, has urged Vice President Kashim Shettima to take charge of security, while President Bola Tinubu should handle economic matters as promised during their campaign.
Obi voiced his concerns on Tuesday night via X, emphasizing the urgency of the matter, especially with the surge in violence spreading through the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja.
He highlighted the recent tragic killings of two abducted young girls in Abuja, describing the situation as both depressing and urgent.
Obi was referring to a statement made by Shettima at the Annual General Conference of the Nigerian Bar Association in August 2022.
Shettima had categorically stated that, if elected, he would be in charge of security, while President Tinubu would handle economic matters.
Obi called on Shettima and Tinubu to fulfil their campaign promises, urging them to put forth maximum effort even if achieving 100% results might be challenging.
He also advocated for a halt to all forms of foreign trips by government officials until the nation effectively addresses the security issues facing its citizens.
Obi emphasized that Nigeria’s ongoing violence and insecurity must be sincerely addressed to make meaningful progress, stating that foreign investors and partners would be hesitant to invest in the country under the current circumstances.
His words: ”At the Annual General Conference of the Nigerian Bar Association held in Lagos in August 2022, the then Vice Presidential Candidate, Sen Kashim Shettima categorically stated that if APC is elected, he as Vice President would be incharge of security, while the President as an expert in economy would handle the economy.
”Nigerians, therefore, now implore them to fulfil their campaign promises. Even if they do not achieve 100% results, we want to see 100% effort.”
