Police take over Lagos airport protest ground amidst aviation union strike

Security operatives have reportedly taken control of the venue of a protest staged by aviation unions.

POLITICS NIGERIA reports that the unions, including the National Union of Air Transport Employees (NUATE), Air Transport Services Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (ATSSSAN), Association of Nigeria Aviation Professionals (ANAP), and the National Association of Aircraft Pilots and Employees (NAAPE), had commenced a two-day warning strike on Monday to demand the implementation of better working conditions for aviation workers.

The protest was held near the Murtala Muhammad Airport (MMA) General Aviation Terminal (domestic terminals) in Lagos and had caused vehicular movement to be grounded on Airport Road, while passengers had to trek to the airport.

According to reports, the unions had threatened to shut down the entire aviation sector if their demands were not met. Members of the unions had protested across major airports in Nigeria on Monday and had vowed to resume the protest on Tuesday.

However, as of Tuesday morning, it was reported that none of the protesting union members were present at the domestic terminal protest ground, which had been taken over by security agencies.

At least six police vehicles, along with officers deployed from the Rapid Response Squad (RRS), a unit under the police command, were said to be present at the venue.
