Reps summon three ministers over non-payment of health workers

The House of Representatives on Tuesday summoned three Ministers over the non-payment of health workers’ salaries in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

This is coming following the promise of the Speaker of House, Femi Gbajabiamila, to look into the challenges of health workers.

The summoned ministers are the Minister of Finance, Zainab Ahmed; Minister of Health, Osagie Ehinire, and Minister of Federal Capital Territory, Mohammed Bello.

The workers said they have not been paid since January due to the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS).

On Tuesday, Sununu Yusuf, a lawmaker from Kebbi State moved a motion moved during plenary.

Speaking thereafter, Mr Gbajabiamila, in his reaction to the motion was quoted saying: “Health workers have nothing to protect themselves. Lots of them don’t have a face mask, while some of them have not been paid salaries since January. It will be embarrassing if they should down their tools in this auspicious time.”

The ministers will on Wednesday meet with the leadership of the House to discuss the challenges of the health workers and lack of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for doctors in Abuja.
