Suspend my pension, allowances – Niger ex-gov writes state govt, reveals reason

Former Abubakar Sani Bello of Niger has written to the state government to suspend his pension and other allowances enjoyed by former governors.

In a letter on Saturday, September 16, to the state government seen by reporters, the former governor noted that he made the decision on a moral and ethical basis.

According to him, as a serving senator (representing Niger North), it is not right to be enjoying the pension while collecting salaries at the Senate.

Senator Bello in the letter noted that the suspension should last until he gives contrary notice after his tenure as a senator.

His letter read:

“I write to request for the suspension of my pension and allowances from the government of Niger State for the duration of my service as senator…

“Your Excellency may recall that I was inaugurated as the senator representing Niger North in the 10th Senate on 13th June, 2023.

“I deem it ethically and morally improper to benefit from my pension and allowances as a former governor of Niger State while I take emoluments as a senator.”
