Tinubu’s Govt Stops NLC’s Planned Nationwide Strike

President Bola Tinubu’s government has cautioned the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) against embarking on any nationwide strike as they are barred by the court.

The federal government made its stand known while reacting to the seven-day ultimatum issued by the NLC to embark on industrial action over the hike in the price of petrol and the high cost of living in Nigeria.

The NLC, on Wednesday, issued an ultimatum for the federal government to reverse all “anti-poor” and “insensitive” policies in the country.

However, the permanent secretary of the ministry of justice, B.E Jedy-Agba, disclosed that the union was restrained by the order of the national industrial court from embarking on any strike regarding the removal of the petrol subsidy.

Jedy-Agba noted that the court had on June 5, granted an injunctive order restraining the NLC and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) from embarking on the planned industrial action/or strike of any nature, pending the hearing and determination of the pending motion on notice.

She, however, advised the union to consider other ways of discussing with the federal government “rather than resorting to self-help and undermining the orders of the court” by proceeding to for the strike actions.

  1. The courts should also be aware that people are dying in a hurry. While we welcome the new government on board,at the same time they should give succour to Nigerians, particularly the workers so as to go to their work. This is so germane.
