Northern Elders Forum (NEF), through its Director of Public Affairs, Dr. Hakeem Baba-Ahmed on Friday said the 2023 Nigerian elections will be “vital”, as “it will take everything we have to begin to turn this country around”.
POLITICS NIGERIA reports that according to Baba-Ahmed, prior to the last general elections in 2019, NEF publicly advised electorates against returning President Muhammadu Buhari to office. He said they predicted that Buhari’s second term will be “a major disaster”. The northern elders have now been vindicated, Baba-Ahmed says.
“Now I wish those people were right, and we were wrong,” the elder statesman wrote, in response to a Twitter user who commented on a section of Nigerians opposed to their position in 2018/2019.
“No one could have imagined the scale of insecurity, poverty, hopelessness and divisions in the country today. It will take everything we have to begin to turn this country around. This is why 2023 elections are vital. Beware!”
This newspaper reports that Buhari has sworn by the Holy Qur’an to relinquish power in 2023 and not to breach the Nigerian Constitution to have a third term in office.
