Why we can’t investigate lawmakers indicted by NDDC – Senate Panel

The Chairman of the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges and Public Petitions, Senator Ayo Akinyelure, says his panel will not be investigating Senators indicted in the alleged contract scam at the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC).

He made this known while speaking to reporters in Abuja over the weekend. Akinyelure noted that the NDDC Forensic Audit Committee refused to provide relevant details that could assist his committee in investigating lawmakers indicted by the agency to have collected multi-billion naira contracts without executing them.

The Senator also said the probe of a fresh petition against the Managing Director of the NDDC, Prof Daniel Pondei, would begin in September when the National Assembly resumes its current annual recess.

He said his committee members would need sufficient time to study all the allegations contained in the petition. The lawmaker added that were currently not available following the adjournment of legislative activities till September 15.

In July, the Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Godswill Akpabio, had named some lawmakers to be beneficiaries of NDDC projects during an investigative hearing by the House of Representatives.
