The All Progressives Congress (APC) leadership in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has accused the FCT minister, Nyesom Wike, of dismantling the party’s structures in the Nigerian capital.
According to the leaders, the minister has ignored members of the APC in Abuja and instead appointed Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) members.
According to them, President Bola Tinubu will struggle to get 2 per cent votes in the 2027 presidential election FCT if he fails to stop the minister, from killing the party in the territory.
They also said the party may lose the next Area Council elections if the situation remains this way.
The party leaders stated this at a press conference in Abuja, decrying Wike’s disregard for APC members in FCT in recent appointments.
The APC chieftains, led by convener Comrade Abdulwahab Ekekhide and co-convener David Omobolaji Obaje, said the minister has refused to sit with the party leadership since assuming office, even though the party has written him a series of letters asking him to grant the party an audience, but all to no avail.
Recall that Wike, a PDP member, was appointed FCT minister by President Tinubu.
Ekekhide, however, said the leadership and entire members of the APC family in the FCT, in unison, reject “in very strong terms the continuous lopsided appointments, abandonment and total disregard for the APC in FCT by the minister.”
He added, “We call on Mr. President, who is the Governor-General to call the Minister to order, so that he can retrace his steps and start empowering the party or else, the party will struggle to get 2% for the President in the 2027 Presidential election and may loose the next Area Councils election if the situation remains this way.”
He added, “As we all know, the President is the Governor-General of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), but delegates his powers to a Minister, and today Barr. Nyesom Wike is standing in for the President as Hon. Minister of the FCT.
“You will all recall, some months back when the Hon. Minister, Barr. Nyesom Wike was quoted to have said that “nobody can take over or kill his political structure in Rivers State”, so why is he now killing the Presidents political structure in the FCT?
“The reason why the APC in the FCT always lost elections is because the Ministers always import strangers who do not belong to any political ward, polling unit or have voting rights/influence in the FCT as appointees of government, but when it is time for general elections they will all park their bagages and travel to their various States thereby, leaving the FCT dry, without empowering its leaders and followers, so how do they expect the party to win elections.”
