2023: CAN president speaks on preferred candidates

Reverend Olasupo Ayokunle, President of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), has urged political parties to ensure that they do not field candidates of the same religion as the presidential and vice presidential candidates in the 2023 election.

Ayokunle was speaking at the weekend during the 60th anniversary of First Baptist Church (FBC), Itire, Lagos State. At the event, the church launched its N250 million ultra-modern purpose hall and sanctuary dedication. The cleric said as the 2023 general election approaches, there is need for parties to ensure that they give their presidential and vice presidential tickets to Christians and Muslims or vice versa.

The Nation quotes Ayokunle as saying: “Religion plays a vital role in politics and governance. This is why it is important for parties not to give their presidential and vice presidential tickets to candidates of the same religion.”

About 18 months to the 2023 presidential elections, a number of Nigerian politicians are touted as successors to President Muhammadu Buhari, a Muslim.

POLITICS NIGERIA recalls that Buhari had been presented to Nigerians as a messiah when he contested and won the presidential election in 2015.

Six years on, many Nigerians are dissatisfied with his performance and no longer believe he is the messiah.
