Anambra NUT protests delayed rescue of abducted teachers, schoolchildren

The Anambra State chapter of the Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT) on Monday took to the streets ro protest the delayed rescue of abducted students and teachers from schools in Oyo and Borno states.
The union members joined colleagues across the country in solidarity with teachers and students held captive by terrorist groups.
The protest followed a directive from the national leadership of the NUT, which ordered the immediate withdrawal of services by teachers in all primary and secondary schools in Oyo State.
According to the union, the strike took effect from Monday, June 1, 2026, until further notice.
The teachers marched from the Anambra State NUT secretariat in Awka to the Government House, carrying placards with various inscriptions.
They demanded the immediate, unconditional, and safe release of all abducted teachers and students across the nation.
Some of the placards read: “Set our pupils, students and teachers free from captivity,” “Stop kidnapping of teachers and students now,” “Classrooms must not become battlefields,” “Government, take action, not empty promises,” and “Teachers deserve security, not fear.”
In her address, the Anambra State NUT Chairman, Comrade Chika Chukwudozie, said the protest was in solidarity with colleagues and students still in captivity.
“For over two weeks now, innocent teachers and learners have remained in captivity under inhumane conditions, leaving their families to live in fear and anguish.
“It is heartbreaking to note that two of our colleagues have been gruesomely murdered in cold blood by bandits in Oyo State.
“While the fate of the remaining abductees hangs in the balance, we hear the trembling voices of our teachers crying for help from the government and well-meaning Nigerians to secure their release from the kidnappers,” Chukwudozie added.
