The leadership of the House of Representatives on Tuesday, October 29, referred Alex Ikwechegh, the lawmaker representing Aba South/Aba North Federal Constituency to its Committee on Ethics and Privileges.
The House’s decision follows a threat issued by Ikwechegh on an e-hailing driver who tried to deliver a package to his residence in Abuja.
Ikwechegh was captured in a video threatening the driver stating that he (the lawmaker) would make his disappear for insulting a person of his calibre.
He also threatened to use the influence of the Inspector General of Police to arrest the Bolt driver.
However, at the plenary today, the House led by Deputy Speaker, Benjamin Kalu directed the embattled lawmaker to the Committee on Ethics and Privileges for further legislative action.
In a resolution following the adoption of a motion of privilege moved by the House Leader, Julius Ihonvbere said Ikwechegh’s action brought ridicule to the Green Chamber.
Although the lawmaker had apologised to the driver and members of the House, the Deputy Speaker said, “We are guided by our rules. Our rule is that if the dignity of the parliament is ridiculed, we investigate through the eyes of justice.
“It is not good for us to judge. Ikwechegh’s appeal was very emotional, touching, and remorseful. But that is not enough. Our rules must be complied with.
“He will go and sit with the Ethics and Privileges Committee for him to be heard,” Kalu ruled.
