BREAKING: Keyamo Apologizes, Screened by Senate After Initial Move to Suspend Ministerial Screening

The Senate has successfully screened Festus Keyamo, a ministerial nominee, after he apologized for ignoring senate summons while serving as minister in Buhari’s administration.

POLITICS NIGERIA reports that Keyamo was summoned by the Senate in 2021 to clarify matters pertaining to a Special Public Works programme, but he failed to honour the invitation.

He also faced accusations of levelling allegations of corruption against the previous administration.

However, Keyamo apologized for his actions during his screening on Monday.

The Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, accepted Keyamo’s apology, and the nominee was then asked to take a bow and go.

Earlier on Monday, the senator representing Abia Central Senatorial District, Darlington Nwokocha, had moved a motion to suspend the screening of former Minister of State, Labour and Employment.

Nwokocha’s motion was seconded by a senator from Abia-South Senatorial District, Enyinnaya Abaribe.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio thereafter subjected the motion to a voice vote, but the lawmakers were divided on the matter.

The red chamber went into a rowdy session, leading to the Senate going into a closed-door session.

This led to Akpabio heading to the Presidential Villa minutes after the rowdy session.

Akpabio was spotted at the Villa at 2:55 pm with Senate Majority Leader Opeyemi Bamidele.

They reportedly left at 03:48 pm without addressing the press.

The ministerial screening of Kayemo eventually resumed, with the former minister allowed to go after the senate’s approval of his apology.
