Niger: Junta threatens to kill deposed President Bazoum if military intervention happens

An emerging report from a top United States diplomat states that the military junta in the Niger Republic is threatening to kill President Mohamed Bazoum if neighbouring countries embark on military intervention.

According to Daily Mail, the junta’s representatives made this threat known to US’ Under Secretary of State Victoria Nuland during her recent visit to the West African country.

This was confirmed by another American official who also spoke anonymously because he was not authorized to talk to the media.

Recall that the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) had earlier on Thursday, August 10, directed the deployment of a “standby force” to restore democracy in Niger after the coup.

However, ECOWAS did not give details about the make-up, location and proposed deployment date for any military intervention force.

President Bola Tinubu described the ongoing political crisis in Niger Republic as a threat to the stability of other Western African countries.
