We Don’t Want ASUU Strike During Your Tenure – Muslim Students Tell Tinubu

The Muslim Students Society of Nigeria (MSSN) has called on President Bola Tinubu to aim at ensuring that the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and other education unions never embark on strike, especially during his tenure.

A former Amir of the MSSN Lagos chapter, Miftaudeen Thanni, made the call on Sunday, July 16 during its Annual Conference, held at the Main Auditorium of the University of Lagos.

On behalf of the group, Thanni called on President Ahmed Tinubu to prioritise education, youth empowerment, security of lives and property, and economic and infrastructural development.

He added: “As we move into a new dispensation of ‘Renewed Hope’ in our national polity, we are urging the federal government to pay more attention and improve education investment. We don’t want strikes again, and this can be achieved by investing more in education.

“It’s a way to invest in peace, as educated individuals are more likely to embrace dialogue, reject extremism, and work towards resolving conflicts through peaceful means.”

Recall that the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU), Bauchi chapter of ASUU had faulted the federal government’s mode of paying its members’ backlog of salaries for the 2022 eight months industrial action.

Speaking with journalists in June 2023, ATBU-ASUU Chairman, Dr Ibrahim Inuwa Ibrahim, berated the former Minister of Labour and Productivity, Dr Chris Ngige, for allegedly misinforming Nigerians about his colleagues at ATBU’s College of Medical Sciences (CMS).
