APC Crisis: Buni set to resign as Caretaker Chairman

The Caretaker Committee Chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Mai Mala Buni, is reportedly set to resign his appointment.

Recall that Buni, Governor of Yobe State, was appointed in June after the dissolution of the Adams Oshiomhole-led National Working Committee (NWC) by the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the party based on recommendations from President Muhammadu Buhari.

The NEC also said the Buni-led caretaker committee will run the affairs of the party pending when it elects new officials during the party’s convention slated for December.

However, the governor is set to vacate his position in the APC after some party members in his home state claimed that Buni’s appointment is a huge distraction.

In a statement on Monday in Abuja, Chairman, Yobe APC Stakeholders, Hussain Muhammad, claimed that Buni spends all his time in Abuja leaving the people of Yobe to the mercy of Boko Haram terrorists. He said Buni has failed as a governor and betrayed his people when they needed him the most.

He said Buni’s appointment is a clear violation of the APC constitution which forbids officers of the party from holding any executive position in government.

However, Muhammad said the group has demanded the impeachment of Governor Buni by the State House of Assembly if he fails to resign. He said that it has become necessary to alert the public and other stakeholders of the governor’s attitude towards serving the people of Yobe state.

He said Buni was not elected as the APC national chairman, but as Yobe State governor which he swore to obey the constitution and protect the lives of his people.
